Verdi's rendition is the first of Shakespeare's plays to be adapted for the opera stage, and was written after the success of Attila in 1846. The 1847 version of Macbeth was a successful production, and Verdi went on to write Otello in 1887, based on Othello, and Falstaff in 1893, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor.
