Hip hop artist Ben Haggerty, known to most by his stage name Macklemore was born on June 19, 1983 in Seattle, Washington. Macklemore was interested in rap from a young age after he discovered the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground. Macklemore first started writing music at the age of 14, crediting his influence to many East Coast hip hop groups and artists, including Hieroglyphics, Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone, Talib Kweli, and Wu-Tang Clan.

Throughout most of the 2000s Macklemore battled addiction, and entered a rehab program in 2008 for drug addiction and alcoholism. He has managed to stay sober except for a brief relapse in 2011.

In 2012, Macklemore released his debut studio album, The Heist, which was produced by Ryan Lewis and himself. The most popular song from the album was “Thrift Shop,” which debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. As of April 2015, “Thrift Shop” has sold almost 8,000,000 digital copies in the United States.

Another popular song from the album was “Same Love,” which discusses the topic of same-sex marriage in the United States. The track reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

In 2013, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis toured North America and Europe in support of The Heist. Due to the popularity of the album, Macklemore tickets were highly sought after.

In 2016, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are embarking on an intimate tour during the winter months, which is scheduled to make stops across the country in January in February. Later in the year, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are expected to launch a large tour in support of their upcoming sophomore studio album.
