About Mamma Mia!

The musical Mamma Mia! is the creation of Catherine Johnson and is based on the musical catalogue of the pop band ABBA. With the songs of the popular Swedish pop-rock group fueling the story of Mamma Mia!, this musical has fans of theatre and the group dancing in their seats. The story of Mamma Mia! is based on the book by Catherine Johnson, and tells the tale of Sophie, a girl who is about to get married on a fictional Greek island. The problem her mother, who owns and manages a restaurant on the island, has never told her who Sophie's father is and Sophie wants him to walk her down the aisle. After doing some investigating Sophie finds a diary where she discovers the names of three men, and promptly invites each of them to her wedding, without telling her mother of course. The show premiered in 1999 in London's West End. It wasn't until three years later that Mamma Mia! would make its debut on Broadway when it premiered October 18, 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre. The show became an immense hit being nominated for five Tony Awards in 2002 including Best Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Louise Pitre) and Best Book of a Musical.
