About Manchester United FC

The history of Manchester United Football Club dates back to 1878, when the team was founded as the Newton Heath LYR Football Club. Founded by a department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, the team began by playing against other departments and rail companies. Throughout the later years of the 19th century, the football club played in multiple leagues and eventually became independent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.

Facing massive debts in the early 1900s, the club found businessmen to invest in the team. In return, the investors were granted direct interest in running the club. In 1902, the club name was officially changed to Manchester United Football Club. Throughout the first quarter of the 20th century, Manchester United FC bounced up and down between the first and second level of professional English football, but that changed in 1925, when Manchester United FC was promoted to the highest level of play, for good.

Today, Manchester United FC plays in what is now the top level of English football, the Premier League. Manchester United FC currently holds the record for the most Premier League titles with 13, as well as the record for the most titles in Football League First Division, with 20.
