About Mannheim Steamroller

Mannheim Steamroller is an American musical group that was founded by Chip Davis and co-founded by Jackson Berkey in 1974. After struggling to find a record label who was interested in what the two had to offer, they established their own music label, American Gramaphone. They created a fictitious band, Mannheim Steamroller, to promote their work. The group got part of its name from an 18th century German music technique called "The Mannheim roller." "Steam" was included in the group name in remembrance of first automobile invented and manufactured in Germany, the steam-powered engine.

Davis and his group marketed their first album Fresh Aire in stereo show rooms, which was ideal for magnifying the sound of his classical music. This 18th century-style classical rock album was produced fully with an electric bass and synthesizers. Two years later, Mannheim Steamroller released its second album titled Fresh Aire II. In the following years they produced an additional eight Fresh Aire albums, with each one signifying a different theme. The first four albums represented the seasons: spring, fall, summer and winter. The group later decided to touch upon other themes including the moon, Greek mythology, the number seven and the theme of infinity.

Success

Mannheim Steamroller hit the jackpot when they released their first new age holiday album, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, comprised of Yuletide favorites. This was Mannheim Steamroller's first album to make it onto the Billboard album chart at #50. Songs included "Deck The Halls" and "We Three Kings." Steamroller included various styles of new age music to help create artistic inspiration, relaxation and optimism for its listeners. Instruments included drums, percussion, bass, guitars, French horn, flute, harp and string instruments.

Mannheim Steamroller is now known better for their Christmas albums than the Fresh Aire series. From 1984 to 2009 Steamroller released twelve Christmas albums. One of the best-selling albums of 1995 was Christmas in the Aire, ranking #1. Over a decade and a half later this album remains the 5th best-selling Christmas or holiday album, according to Nielsen/SoundScan, and in 2009 it sold over 3 million copies. After many years of successful holiday season Mannheim Steamroller tours Davis created two groups, one to tour the west coast and the other to tour the east coast.

Mannheim Steamroller Gives Back

Over the years Mannheim Steamroller has sold roughly 28 million albums in the United States alone. However, Steamroller has done much to help out their fans and those in need. Mannheim Steamroller belongs to the Adopt A Hero For Christmas organization that brings happiness to wounded soldiers and their families during the holiday seasons by giving gifts. They have also donated all of their proceeds from sales of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas song to Feeding America.
