Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, Long Island, NY. She was born into a musical family, as her mother was a former opera singer and vocal coach, and true to her family history, Carey began singing at the young age of three. After graduating from high school on Long Island, she worked with musicians Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies, who both worked with her on writing songs for her own demo tape. Carey eventually moved to New York City and found work as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr.

In 1988, Carey met record executive Tommy Mottola at a party while working with Starr. Starr presented Mottola with Carey's demo tape, to which he listened upon leaving the party. Mottola was so impressed that he tracked down the aspiring singer and offered her a recording contract with Columbia Records. Shortly after signing, she released her debut album, Mariah Carey, in 1990. It rose to #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and remained there for five weeks. It included one of her best known hits, "Vision of Love," and won her two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In 1993, Carey released her sophomore album, Emotions. Although it did not receive the same level of success as her first album, it has sold at least 10 million copies since being released and included the #1 single "Emotions." Carey's next album, Music Box, remains her best selling record to date, with sales of more than 28 million. It included the hit single "Dreamlover."

Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, Carey continued to release a string of highly successful albums, with Merry Christmas, Daydream, Butterfly, and The Emancipation of Mimi all being major successes. During this period, she also released a number of popular singles such as "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day," "My All," "I Still Believe," and "Heartbreaker" and her signature song "We Belong Together," many of which are popular at Mariah Carey concerts. In 2008 Carey released E=MC2 and in September of 2009 she released Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Carey is known for her work with artists such as Kanye West and R. Kelly. Carey was one of the most popular artists of the 1990s and "We Belong Together" was declared by Billboard to be the most popular song of the 2000s.

In 2015, Carey began her residency at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. When all is done, the residency will have had three legs, with the last one wrapping up in February 2016. During the shows, Carey performs all eighteen US number-one hits.
