Mariah Carey was born into a musical family as her mother was a former opera singer and vocal coach; Mariah Carey began singing at the young age of three. After graduating from high school on Long Island, Mariah Carey continued to work in the Long Island music scene where was a demo singer for local recording studios and she went on to work with musicians Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies who both worked with her on writing songs for her own demo tape. Mariah Carey eventually moved to New York City and worked odd-jobs to pay the rent, she also attended beauty school. Also while living in New York, Mariah Carey became a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr.
In 1988, Mariah Carey met record executive Tommy Mottola at a party while she was working with Starr. Starr presented Mottola with Mariah Carey's demo tape, which he listened upon leaving the party. Mottola was impressed and tracked down Mariah Carey where he offered her a recording contract with Columbia Records. Shortly after signing with Columbia Records, Mariah Carey began recording her debut album, Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey co-wrote all of the tracks on the album and it was released in 1990. Mariah Carey rose to #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and remained at #1 for several weeks. Needless to say, Mariah Carey's debut album was extremely successful and she went on to win a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Not long after the release of her debut album, Mariah Carey went on to release her sophomore album, Emotions. Emotions did not receive the same praise as Mariah Carey, although in 1993, Mariah Carey had the opportunity to work with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds on the recording of her next album, Music Box. After the release of Music Box, the album went on to be Mariah Carey's greatest success. Mariah Carey went on to record and release Merry Christmas (1994), Daydream (1995), Butterfly (1997), Rainbow (1999), Glitter (2001), Charmbracelet (2002), and The Emancipation of Mimi (2005).
In 2007, Mariah Carey began working on her next album which would be named E=MC², the album was released on April 2, 2008. The single, "Touch My Body", from the album, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This would push Mariah Carey past Elvis Presley into second place for the artist with the most number-one singles. Mariah Carey is second now only to the Beatles in terms of #1 singles.
