Martina Mariea Schiff McBride was born July 29, 1966, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Her parents owned a dairy farm outside of nearby Sharon, Kansas where Martina lived until she graduated from high school. Martina McBride began singing in the family band "The Schiffters," who played at local dances in South-Central Kansas. After high school, Martina McBride gigged around Kansas singing and playing keyboards with several different bands.
It wasn't until Martina McBride met her husband, soundman John McBride, that she received her big break. In 1990, John and Martina McBride moved to Nashville, where John worked for artists like Charlie Daniels and Ricky Van Shelton. John helped Martina McBride to produce her demo tape, which she submitted along with a biography and some pictures in a big purple envelope marked "Requested Material" to RCA. The record company was impressed with her talent, and signed Martina McBride to RCA in 1991.
Martina McBride's first album, The Time Has Come, was released on May 15, 1992, and her first opening gig, for Garth Brooks in Denver, Colorado, was just two weeks later. The first single from Martina McBride only reached Number 23 on the Country Top 40; her commercial breakthrough did not arrive until the release of her second album, The Way That I Am (1993), which reached platinum status. The lead single from this album, My Baby Loves Me, reached Number Two on the country charts.
The title track from the next album by Martina McBride, Wild Angels (1995), was her first Number One single, and the album achieved gold status. Martina McBride currently has two Gold, four Platinum, a Double and two Triple- Platinum albums under her belt, including Evolution (1997), Martina (2003), and Timeless (2005).
