Metric is a Canadian indie rock band that was formed in Toronto in 1998, consisting of Emily Haines on lead vocals, James Shaw on guitar, Joshua Winstead on bass, and Joules Scott-Key on percussion.
Emily Haines and James Shaw met in Toronto in 1997, where the two soon began dating and writing songs together. In 1998, the duo self-released the EP, Mainstream EP. After spending time in London, where they had signed a publishing deal with Chrysalis Records, the two moved to New York and recorded the album Grow Up and Blow Away in 2001, however, the album’s release was delayed for years by Restless Records, and was not released until 2007.
After Metric finished recording Grown Up and Blow Away, they recruited two new bandmates, Winstead and Scott-Key. In 2003, Metric released their first studio album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? through Last Gang Records. The album featured the singles “Combat Baby” and “Dead Disco” and was given 3.5 stars out of a 5 star rating by Allmusic.
Since the release of their debut album, Metric has gone on to release a total of six albums, with Synthetica being the most popular. Released in 2012, Synthetica peaked at #12 on the US Billboard 200 and reached #1 on the US Alternative Albums chart.
