Participating in the Big Ten of the NCAA’s Division I-A, Michigan State offers 12 sports teams for men and 13 for women. The three most popular sports at Michigan State University are basketball, football, and ice hockey. MSU’s men’s basketball team has won the National Championship twice in their existence; once in 1979 and most recently in 2000. Led by Earvin “Magic” Johnson in 1979, the Michigan State Spartans beat Indiana State led by Larry Bird in the championship game. In 2000, the MSU basketball team was led to their second national title by Morris Peterson, Charlie Bell, and Mateen Cleaves. The MSU Spartans basketball team plays their home games at Breslin Student Events Center.

Football at Michigan State University began as a club sport in 1884 and became a varsity program two years later. In 1953, the Michigan State University Spartans football team was admitted to the Big Ten Conference. The same year, they defeated UCLA in their first Rose Bowl appearance. Since 2007, the MSU Spartans football team has been coached by Mark Dantonio. The team plays in Spartan Stadium, which opened in 1923.

Michigan State University’s ice hockey team was founded in 1922 and competed as an independent member of the NCAA. Today, as with the other Michigan State Spartan teams, the university’s ice hockey team competes in the Big Ten. The team has won three national titles, most recently in 2007. The MSU Spartan’s ice hockey team plays their home games at Munn Ice Arena, which is located on the university’s campus.
