On November 23, 1992, Destiny Hope Cyrus was born in Nashville, TN. As a young girl, Miley Cyrus won roles on television shows like Doc and movies such as Big Fish. Her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, called her Smiley because she always looked happy, and Destiny had hopes and dreams. At the age of 12, she auditioned for a role in an upcoming Disney Channel hit show, but producers thought she was too young. Determined to succeed, she kept trying and joined the cast with Emily Osment, Jason Earles, Mitchel Musso, Moises Arias, and her father in 2006.

Disney released a number of albums and singles to accompany the show. As popular as Britney Spears in her more innocent days, the teenager released singles like "See You Again" and "Nobody's Perfect" on the album Meet Miley Cyrus and embarked on The Best of Both Worlds Tour. In 2008, Destiny legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus and released her second studio album, Breakout. With no connection to the Disney sitcom, it included songs like "Goodbye" and a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." After Breakout, the star performed with Demi Lovato and celebrated her Sweet 16th Birthday Party. The teen actress then moved on to Hollywood, and Hannah Montana: The Movie hit theaters in May of 2009.

Cyrus released her next album, Can't Be Tamed, in 2010. The album was an attempt to even more sharply break from the Hannah Montana brand, but it faced mixed critical reception. Following the album's release, Cyrus toured in South America and Australia and then took a break from music to focus on film. In 2012, Cyrus made news after re-emerging with a new image, and the next year she announced a new album, Bangerz. The first two singles from the album, "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball," were notable for music videos presented Cyrus in a much more sexual image than her previous work. "Wrecking Ball" reached number one, making it Cyrus' first single to do so.
