About Ministry

Allen David Jourgensen, founder of Ministry, was born on October 8, 1958, in Havana, Cuba. He eventually moved to the United States with his mother and became a radio DJ before joining the band Special Affect. In 1981, Al Jourgensen left Special Affect to create his own band with Stephen George. Ministry began as a new wave synth pop/dance style band and released their first single, "Cold Life," on Wax Trax! Records in 1981.

In 1983, Ministry released their first studio album, With Sympathy on the Arista label. The album sold slowly but managed to crack into the Billboard Top 100. Dissatisfied with his first album, Al Jourgensen decided to form his notorious side project, the Revolting Cocks ("RevCo"), and to move Ministry to Sire Records for the release of his next (mostly solo) album, Twitch (1986). This album sold slightly better than the first, but it was not until the release of The Land of Rape and Honey in 1988 that Ministry achieved a stylistic breakthrough. With the aid of Paul Barker and William Rieflin, The Land of Rape and Honey established Ministry as a formidable force in the industrial metal genre.

Next came The Mind is A Terrible Thing to Taste in 1989, which was also highly acclaimed and was accompanied by the band's "RollerBall" tour. In 1992, Ministry released what is arguably their most successful album to date, Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs. The album contained the single "Jesus Built My Hotrod," which was a hit on MTV and broke the band into the mainstream. Ministry's following albums--Filth Pig (1996), Dark Side of the Spoon (1999), Animositisomina (2003), Houses of the Molé (2004) and Rio Grande Blood (2006)--all rode on the success of Psalm 69 but could not match the popularity of that milestone album. Most recently, Ministry released an album called The Last Sucker in September of 2007.
