In 1969, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam created the television show Monty Python's Flying Circus in England. Fans loved the comedy sketches, and the team wrote movies such as Life of Brian. A parody of the Lancelot legend, Spamalot is based on a 1975 film called Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In January of 2005, Monty Python's Spamalot debuted in Chicago. Created by Eric Idle and directed by Mike Nichols, the Broadway production opened at the Shubert Theatre in New York City. Soon after the premiere, Monty Python's Spamalot tickets were hard to find.
The smash hit won three Tony Awards for its Broadway run, including Best Musical.
