Motorhead is an English metal band that was formed by Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister in 1975. Kilmister had previously been in the band Hawkwind, but was dismissed from the band for drug use. Once on his own, Kilmister decided he would form his own band. He recruited Larry Wallis on electric guitar and Lucas Fox on drums. Kilmister took on the roll as the band’s lead singer and bassist. By 1977 the band was on the verge of calling it quits after their record label, United Artists refused to release their debut album because they were dissatisfied with it.
By chance, they were given the opportunity to have two days in the studio with producer Speedy Keen to record a single. However, the original two days turned into a few more days and the band wound up recording an entire album. The self-titled album was released in August 1977 and spent time on the UK Albums Chart. Due to the album’s success, the band signed with Bronze Records and released their second album, Overkill in 1979. Overkill was credited with having a huge impact on British punk culture and paved the way for UK82, a new type of punk music featuring heavy drumbeats and distorted guitars.
Aside from Kilmister, the band’s members have changed over the years. Today band members include Phil Campbell, who has served as the band’s guitarists since 1984 and Mikkey Dee, who has manned the drums for Motorhead since 1992.
Since the band’s formation, they have released over 20 albums. Their newest album, Bad Magic will be released in August 2015. In the album’s support, Motorhead will be launching a tour at the end of the summer and will play at venues across the country through September 2015.
