Choreographer Twyla Tharp produced Movin' Out in 2002. Not your typical musical, Movin' Out combines dancing with lyrics and music by Billy Joel. Without any dialogue, the Movin' Out cast acts out the story through motion. Above the stage, Piano Man sings the lyrics and the band plays the music. At the same time, the dancers perform below.
In 1949, Billy Joel was born in the Bronx in New York City. His father was a classical pianist, so Billy Joel began piano lessons at a young age. Other children teased Billy Joel because he preferred music instead of sports, but his hard work paid off and shows like Movin' Out are popular today. The Billy Joel songs in Movin' Out include "Pressure," "Big Man on Mulberry Street," "Summer, Highland Falls," "The Stranger," and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." Billy Joel does not perform in Movin' Out, but the show is full of his music.
Twyla Tharp invented the concept for Movin' Out. A dancer and choreographer, Tharp was born in 1941 in Portland, Indiana. As a young woman, she attended Barnard College in New York City. She began dancing in college and joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company after she graduated in 1963. In 1965 she formed a company called Twyla Tharp Dance. Twyla Tharp presented Movin' Out in 2002, and the show began a national tour in 2004. The show was a hit and in 2008, Movin' Out began a third national tour.
Unique and creative, Movin' Out fills the room with energy and dynamic movement. If you love Billy Joel, Twyla Tharp, rock and roll, and dance, you will love Movin' Out tickets.
