Based on author and rabbi Chaim Potok’s 1972 novel of the same name, My Name is Asher Lev features a Hasidic Jewish boy in New York City. Ari Brand is Asher, while Mark Nelson plays his father Aryeh (and all other male roles), and Jenny Bacon plays his mother, Rivkeh (and all other female roles). Potok, author of the novel, has a daughter named Naama, who is the understudy for the role of Asher’s mother. This Off-Broadway production was adapted by Aaron Posner and is under the direction of Gordon Edelstein.
Asher Lev, a bit of a loner, was born with a gift. He has innate artistic ability that he’s desperate to pursue. In 1950s Brooklyn, during the time of Joseph Stalin and the persecution of Jewish individuals in the Soviet Union, Asher’s art causes immense conflict within his Hasidic Jewish family and community. If he’s not spending time working on religious art, they ask, then what’s the point? My Name is Asher Lev tickets will give audiences a peek into the universal story of pursuing one’s dreams, against all odds.
