Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, also known as his stage name NAS was born on September 14, 1973 into a musical family in Crown Heights, Brookyln. NAS's father, Olu Dara is a well-known jazz and blues musician originally from Mississippi. Growing up in a Long Island City housing project, NAS dropped out of school in eighth grade, but educated himself through various religious texts. Around the same time he also began playing trumpet as well as writing rhymes. When NAS was a teenager, he partnered up with his best friend and neighbor, Willy "Ill Will" Graham, with NAS being the rapper, and Ill Will as his DJ.

In 1992, NAS secured a record deal with Columbia Records and went on to release his debut album, Illmatic in 1994. The highly acclaimed album went on to be called a "hip hop masterpiece" from music critics.
