About New Kids on the Block

New Kids on the Block debuted in 1986. Inspired by the success of New Edition, Maurice Starr and Mary Alford wanted to form a 1980's boy band called Nynuk. Over 500 teenage performers, break dancers, and singers auditioned for Nynuk. Maurice Starr chose 15-year-old Donnie Wahlberg, Donnie's younger brother, Mark Wahlberg, and their friends Danny Wood and Jordan Knight. Soon Jordan Knight's younger brother, Jonathan Knight, and 12-year-old Joey McIntyre joined the group. The group changed their name from Nynuk to New Kids on the Block

The first NKOTB album, New Kids On The Block, came out in 1986. New Kids On The Block's early bubblegum pop sound failed to impress music lovers, but the second New Kids On The Block album, Hangin' Tough, rose to the top of the charts in 1988. Subsequent albums, such as Step by Step, Merry, Merry Christmas, No More Games/The Remix Album, proved to be hits. Popular New Kids on the Block songs include "You Got It (The Right Stuff)," "Step By Step," "Please Don't Go Girl," and "Hangin' Tough." Other NKOTB favorites include "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," "Angel of Love," and "Valentine Girl."

New Kids On The Block were among the hottest superstars of the late 1980s. The official New Kids On The Block fan club had over 100,000 members and received over 30,000 letters per day. However, in 1992 controversy hit the group when critics accused New Kids on the Block of lip syncing, which the band denied. Still, the group was facing tough times. Their next album, Face the Music, was not a great success, due to a chance in musical style. Shortly after, Jordan Knight left the group during the Face the Music Tour, and NKOTB disbanded in 1994.

In 2008, New Kids on the Block reunited to produce a new album, The Block. The group performed with musicians such as Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers on the New Kids on the Block Reunion Tour. In 2011, NKOTB will perform with Backstreet Boys, the hit boy band of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
