About New Kids On The Block

During the 1980s, Maurice Starr a.k.a. "Podman" and partner, Mary Alford, got together to create the group that would eventually become the infamous New Kids On The Block. Starr and Asford searched the Boston area and held auditions where more than 500 teenaged boys showed up to have the chance to become part of the group. 15-year-old Donnie Wahlberg was the first to impress the duo with his singing and dancing; he became the first member of the teenaged sensation, which in the early days had been named Nynuk. Donnie Wahlberg assisted Starr and Alford in recruiting the rest of the members of New Kids On The Block. Amongst the new recruits were Donnie's younger brother, Mark, and his best friend Danny Wood, who at the time was a skilled breakdancer. Donnie persuaded schoolmate and friend, Jordan Knight, to audition for the New Kids On The Block; Knight was immediately accepted after wowing Starr and Alford with his amazing falsetto. Knight recommended his younger brother, Jonathan, to Starr and Alford and he eventually became the last member of New Kids On The Block.

As New Kids On The Block began to finally come together, Mark opted to quit New Kids On The Block because he had previously been under the impression that New Kids On The Block would have a harder, edgier sound; he was uninspired by the clean-cut bubblegum direction the songs were going in. Mark was ultimately replaced by 12-year-old Joey McIntyre. New Kids On The Block consistently rehearsed after school and on weekends and their hard work paid off; Starr was able to land them a record deal with Columbia Records.

The first album put out by New Kids On The Block was New Kids On The Block in 1986. Their self-titled debut album was a flop as their bubblegum pop sound was not well-received by listeners. New Kids On The Block's follow-up album, Hangin' Tough was released in 1988. Hangin' Tough rose to the top of the charts and New Kids On The Block went on to record a holiday album as well as another album, Step by Step, which was released in 1990.

In 1992, there were allegations against New Kids On The Block, accusing them of lip-syncing. New Kids On The Block denied the allegations and went on to perform live on "The Arsenio Hall Show" which successfully repressed the claim. Although New Kids On The Block were able to clear their name from the lip-syncing allegations, many fans were quick to judge and their 1994 release, Face the Music, was not the great success that they could have hoped for. New Kids On The Block went out on tour in support of Face the Music, but after Jordan Knight dropped off the tour because of personal reasons, the rest of the members of New Kids On The Block decided to end the tour early, cancelling the remainder of the shows. New Kids On The Block split up altogether in June of 1994.

On April 4, 2008, New Kids On The Block made an appearance on the "The Today Show" and confirmed a New Kids On The Block reunion. New Kids On The Block announced that they will perform on "The Today Show" on May 16 and a new album will be released this summer. Following the release of their first new album since 1994, New Kids On The Block will start out on their highly anticipated international tour.
