North Carolina has always been a basketball loving state with the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils battling every year in college basketball, but it wasn't until 1988 that the state got a taste of the pro game. Three years earlier the NBA announced plans to expand and would ultimately select Charlotte as one of their destinations along with Orlando, Minnesota and Miami. It didn't take long for Charlotte Hornets to take hold in the NBA as in only their fifth season they qualified for the playoffs. Hornets owner George Shinn grew frustrated with the teams arena and when his request for a new one was ultimately declined, he moved his franchise south, to New Orleans. With the Charlotte Hornets becoming the New Orleans Hornets, the city was given a second chance at a franchise after the Jazz left for Utah years earlier. In the first years after becoming the New Orleans Hornets the team qualified for the playoffs but the years that followed would be tough as they slipped into the lottery. The franchise was able to get their next franchise star in 2005 when the selected Chris Paul to lead their team. Quickly becoming one of the best point guards in the game, Paul led the New Orleans Hornets to a 56-26 record and a second seed in the Western Conference in 2008.
