The New York Knickerbockers were established in 1946 as part of the Basketball Association of America. Of the 11 original franchises, the Knicks were among the most successful teams in the league and advanced into the postseason in 1946, 1947 and 1948. But in 1949, the franchise, along with the rest of the BAA, merged with their rival National Basketball League, forming the National Basketball Association. The roots of the NBA were then planted, and the New York Knicks have been a staple ever since.
