The history of the New York Mets can be traced all the way back to 1957, when in the same year both the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved across the country to sunny California. Their moves left one of the biggest markets in sports without a National League franchise. It was only a few years later when William Shea announced that he was forming a third major league, the Continental League and would include a New York team. But, the Continental League never got off the ground and disbanded after a promise that four of its teams would become expansion teams in the National or American League. The New York Mets joined the NL in 1962 hiring legendary manager Casey Stengal to lead the franchise. Over the next seven years, the team would not finish with a winning record and never finished better than 24 games out of first place. In 1969 everything changed.
Going from the lovable losers to the "Amazin' Mets", New York Mets tickets finally became popular in the 1969 season when they finished with a record of 100-62 and won the National League Eastern Division for the first time. Behind players like Tom Seaver, Tommie Agee and Jerry Koosman, the Mets found their way into the National League Championship Series and swept the favored Atlanta Braves. When the "Miracle Mets", as they were called in the media, reached the World Series they were put up against the Baltimore Orioles, a team that was filled with future Hall Of Famers. But the talent of the Orioles was no match for the heart that Mets carried into the series, as they prevailed in five games.
Following the 1969 title was more years of mediocrity, but 1986 once again was amazing season for the New York Mets. Finishing the season with 108 wins, the Mets made it to the fall classic this time against the Boston Red Sox. With the team facing elimination in Game 6 of the series and with everyone on the edge of their seats, holding their breath, Mookie Wilson hit a weak ground ball down the first base-line miraculously finding its way through Bill Buckner's legs, scoring Ray Knight and giving the Mets the win. They came back in Game 7 and won again, taking the series. It was their second World Series title.
They are know looking for their third championship, and always are a sure bet to provide their fans with plenty of drama.
