Showing 1-25 of 59 results. The New York Rangers are a pro ice hockey team based in New York City. The Rangers, according to Wikipedia, have been a part of the NHL since 1926, making them one of the oldest teams in the NHL. Because of their long-running history, they are considered one of the "Original Six" NHL teams. The Rangers originally got their nickname due to a play on words with the founder of the team, who was a famous promoter running Madison Square Garden at the time. The founder's name was Tex Rickard, and the new hockey team was promoted as "Tex's Rangers", and the name stuck with the team. The team got off to a fantastic start in the NHL. Competing in the second ever Stanley Cup finals, the Rangers won the Cup and were "the 2nd American team, and first NHL team from the U.S. to get their names carved into the silver chalice."
An interesting piece of the team's history revolves around the "curse of 1940". The legend states that after the Rangers evicted the New York Americans from Madison Square Garden, the president of the American placed a curse on the Rangers, stating that they would not win the cup again in his lifetime. This so-called curse seemed to do the trick, however. It would be 54 years before the Rangers won the cup again in 1994, but have not won a Stanley Cup since.
Since 1993, the Rangers have played as part of the NHL's Atlantic Division. Previously part of the Patrick Division, the team moved to their current division as part of the leagues realignment. As of 2009, New York has only been able to win the division once, in 1994, the year of their Stanley Cup win.
Despite their struggles, the Rangers are one of the most popular teams in the NHL. Playing at the historic Madison Square Garden, fans pile in to catch the team play during both during the regular and post-season.
