The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team based in New York City. The Rangers have been a part of the NHL since 1926, making them one of the oldest teams in the NHL. Because of their long-running history, the Rangers are often referred to as one of the "Original Six" NHL teams. The team originally got their nickname due to a play on words with the founder of the team, who was a famous promoter running Madison Square Garden at the time. The founder's name was Tex Rickard, and the new hockey team was promoted as "Tex's Rangers," and the name stuck with the team. This so-called curse seemed to do the trick. It would be 54 years before the Rangers won the cup again in 1994, but they have not won a Stanley Cup since.

Since 1993, the Rangers have played as part of the NHL's Atlantic Division. Previously part of the Patrick Division, the team moved to their current division as part of the league's realignment. As of 2009, New York has only been able to win the division once, in 1994, the year of their Stanley Cup win.
