Few teams in professional sports have a long and storied history to match that of the New York Yankees. The 27-time World Series champion team has had a rabid fan base that fills Yankee Stadium year after year, making it difficult for any team to come to the Bronx. Put on your pinstripes and get your New York Yankees tickets at TicketNetwork.com as they battle for the AL East title.

The history of the New York Yankees begins back in 1903 when Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased a failing franchise out of Baltimore and moved it to New York. The team began under the nickname of the Highlanders. It was not until 10 years later, when the team started playing their home games at the Polo Grounds, that they became known as the Yankees. In 1918, the fate of the New York Yankees changed forever with one decision to purchase Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000. For his time with the Yankees, Ruth is known as perhaps the greatest baseball player to ever live and Yankee fans will always remember his greatness.

The New York Yankees have had a litany of Hall of Fame players put on the pinstripes. Lou Gehrig was recognized for years as the iron man of baseball, playing in 2,130 straight games, a streak that lasted from 1925 to 1939. Aside from being immortalized by Paul Simon in song, Joe Dimaggio is also known for his incredible hitting streak. A record that still stands to this day, his 56-game hitting streak has not even been close to being touched in the years since it was set. From Mantle to Maris, from Rizzuto to Jackson, the New York Yankees have had too many great players to name them all.

While the Yankees have their fair share of players already in Cooperstown, they also have many future Hall of Famers as well. Of course there is Derek Jeter, the star shortstop who has proven to be a clutch performer and one of the great ambassadors of the game. Pitcher Mariano Rivera is maybe the greatest closer to ever play and is as intimidating as a relief pitcher can be. As both players close in on the end of their careers, they will go down as without question the greatest Yankees to ever play there respective positions.

Every season the Yankees are playing for the World Series title, and anything short of that, is a failed season. It won't be easy for them this season though, as the American League East may be the most competitive division in all of Major League Baseball featuring teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and, of course, their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox.
