Newsies was originally a Disney movie that came out in 1992. Though it wasn't a great success at the box office, the film eventually became a sort of cult classic. Based on this following, the decision was made to make Newsies into a stage musical, which premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey on September 25, 2011. The short run received many positive reviews, initiating a transfer to Broadway.
The musical began previews at the Nederlander Theatre on March 15, 2012, with a limited run originally scheduled to end June 10. The production has since been extended to an open run and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning the awards for Best Original Score and Best Choreography.
Newsies is based on the real-life story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899, which took place in New York City from July 20 to August 2 of that year. Thousands of children, many of whom are homeless and even orphaned, are trying to make a living selling newspapers. However, the publishers of the newspapers, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, decide to try and profit from the boys, raising the price of newspapers and refusing to allow newsboys to sell back papers they fail to sell. Fed up with such treatment, Jack "Cowboy" Kelly decides to call for a strike of all the newsboys across the city. Will his ploy succeed? Find out with Newsies tickets.
