Onika Tanya Maraj better known as Nicki Minaj, was born on December 8, 1982 in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Minaj lived with her grandmother in Saint James until the age of five, when she moved to Jamaica, Queens, where her mother was already living. After graduating from LaGuardia High School in Manhattan, Minaj tried to make a name for herself as an actress, finding success early on by earning a role if the Off-Broadway play In Case You Forget in 2001. Unfortunately for Minaj, her acting career did not take off as she had hoped, and she consequently worked a variety of jobs in the food and customer service industries.
In the early 2000s, Minaj rapped in a group called The Hoodstars, who were signed to Brooklyn R&B group, Full Force. Minaj left the group when they were not able to attain the level of success she wished to achieve. After uploading songs to her Myspace page and sending several songs to higher-ups in the music industry, she was signed by Fendi, CEO of Brooklyn based Dirty Money Entertainment.
In July 2007, Minaj released her debut mixtape, Playtime is Over and her second, Sucka Free in April 2008. Later that year she was named Female Artist of the Year at the Underground Music Awards. Minaj dropped her third mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty in April 2009. The mixtape, which featured appearances from Busta Rhymes, Gucci Mane, Drake, and Lil Wayne, received some playtime on BET and MTV. The song, “I Get Crazy” reached number 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart.
After being featured on Beam Me Up Scotty, Lil Wayne singed Nicki Minaj to his record label, Young Money Entertainment. Soon after, Minaj was featured on the compilation Young Money song, “BedRock,” which peaked at the number two spot on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. In 2010, Minaj released the singles “Check It Out,” “Your Love,” and “Right Thru Me” ahead of her debut album, Pink Friday. Less than a month after the album was released, it was certified platinum in December 2010.
Minaj released her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in 2012, which featured the hit songs “Roman in Moscow” and “Starships.” The album reached the 26th spot on the US Billboard 200 and the third spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
In December 2014, Minaj released her third studio album, The Pinkprint, which reached the number one spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album features appearances from Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and many more artists. Singles from the album include, “Anaconda,” “Only,” and “Truffle Butter,” which have all received significant radio play. Recently, Minaj embarked on the first leg of her "Pinkprint Tour" with Trey Songz, and Ester Dean, which will stop in venues throughout Europe. The second leg of the tour is scheduled to start in July 2015 and will make stops in 19 cities across the United States and Canada.
