About Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails (often shortened to just NIN) is owned, operated, and produced by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor. Reznor was born on May 17, 1965, in Mercer, Pennsylvania. He began playing piano at the age of five, and joined his first band, Option 30, in college. Reznor joined The Innocent in 1985, then quit and joined the band Exotic Birds in 1986. While working in a recording studio in the mid-eighties, Trent Reznor began recording his own demo tapes, which earned him a contract with TVT Records. In 1989, Trent Reznor as Nine Inch Nails released his first album, Pretty Hate Machine.

Because he had difficulty finding a band who could play his music as he wanted it to sound, Trent Reznor, like Prince, actually played every instrument on his first album except drums. Pretty Hate Machine was well received by critics, spent 113 weeks on the Billboard charts, and contained the popular singles "Down in It," "Sin," and "Head Like a Hole." Trent Reznor recruited a touring band and Nine Inch Nails hit the road in the early 1990's. Nine Inch Nails tickets began selling quickly, due in part to Reznor and the band destroying their instruments at the end of each show.

Support for Nine Inch Nails grew considerably after they performed at the first Lollapalooza Festival in 1991. Nine Inch Nails released an EP called Broken in 1992 and followed up with a second full-length album, The Downward Spiral, in 1994. Nine Inch Nails reached a peak in publicity after performing at Woodstock in 1994, where thousands of fans bought tickets and millions more watched on Pay-Per-View.

Nine Inch Nails did not produce another album until the release of The Fragile in 1999. The album was highly anticipated and debuted at #1 on the charts. The Fragile also contained the singles "The Day the World Went Away," "Into the Void," and "We're in This Together." In 2007, the album Year Zero was released along with an alternate reality game where Nine Inch Nails fans could find new songs contained on USB drives that were hidden in concert venues. Tracks off this album were also available for fans to remix, which added to the interactivity. Subsequent albums have also moved toward digital distribution, such as Ghosts I - IV. Trent Reznor had left his record label and established Nine Inch Nails as an independent entity for the release of this album in February of 2008. Ghosts was released digitally, with various pricing options available for fans. Nine Inch Nails's latest album, The Slip, became available on May 5, 2008, and is completely free to download on the Nine Inch Nails website.
