About Oasis

Oasis was formed in 1991 out of an earlier band called The Rain, which was comprised of bass guitarist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan, guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, drummer Tony McCarroll, and vocalist Chris Hutton. Not satisfied with Hutton's performance, Arthurs auditioned Liam Gallagher for the band. Liam suggested the band be renamed Oasis. Shortly after Liam joined Oasis, his brother Noel came to watch Oasis play a show. Seeing the potential to develop Oasis even more with material he had previous written, he asked to join.

After a year of live shows, Oasis recorded a demo, the Live Demonstration tape. Oasis' first big break came in May 1993 when they were invited to play a gig in Glasgow, Scotland. Oasis was spotted by Creation Records co-owner Alan McGee, who signed them to his label four days later. Shortly after a limited white label release of demo song, "Columbia," Oasis released their first single, "Supersonic," in April 1991; it reached #31 in the charts. It was shortly followed by "Shakermaker" and then "Live Forever," which entered the Top 10 of the UK charts. Oasis' first album, Definitely Maybe, was released in September 1994, and reached number one on the charts.

After an incident between Noel and Liam during a tour where Noel temporarily left the band, Oasis got to work on their second album. Oasis released the single "Some Might Say" in April 1995, which reached number one. During the same period, drummer Tony McCarroll was kicked out of Oasis reportedly because the Gallaghers doubted his musical ability, and was replaced with Alan White. In September 1995, bassist Paul McGuigan left Oasis, citing nervous exhaustion. He was replaced with Scott McLeod, who left shortly thereafter during a tour, and was subsequently replaced with McGuigan, whom Oasis had convinced to return. Shortly thereafter, Oasis' second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was released. The album eventually sold over four million copies, making it the UK's third largest selling album of all time. It spun off three more singles, "Wonderwall," (#2) "Don't Look Back in Anger," (#1) and "Champagne Supernova." (#1 - U.S. Charts).

After an incident between the Gallagher brothers on a tour in the United States prompted rumors of a breakup, the brothers reconciled, Oasis completed the tour, and subsequently turned its attention to the third album. Be Here Now was released in August 1997, and although the album became the fastest selling in UK history, and produced a number one single, "D'You Know What I Mean," it was later criticized for being bloated and overproduced. After the failure of this album, Oasis' popularity began to fall. Oasis released a compilation album The Masterplan, consisting of 14 B-sides. Also during this time, the final two founding members of Oasis' pre-cursor band The Rain, Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan, left the band. The Gallaghers and Allan White completed the album. Standing on the Shoulders of Giants was released in February 2000, but suffered from weak reviews, and is the lowest selling Oasis album to this day.

The next year saw Oasis split their time between recording their album, and touring with bands such as The Black Crowes, Spacehog, and supporting Neil Young at a show in Paris. The fifth Oasis album, Heathen Chemistry was released in July 2002, to mixed reviews. It was the first Oasis album to be team written, with all members except Alan White penning songs. After the release, Oasis embarked on a long running world tour in support of the album. They returned to the recording studio in December 2003 to begin recording the sixth album. During this time, long-time drummer Alan White left Oasis, and was replaced by Zak Starkey.

Oasis released the sixth album, Don't Believe in the Truth, in May 2005 to rave reviews and a #1 standing, and has been cited as the best effort since Morning Glory. The album, like its predecessor, features songs written by many ofOasis' members. Singles "Lyla" and "The Importance of Being Idle" reached #1 on the charts, while "Let There Be Love" reached #2. Oasis then went on another long running tour. The tour, which became the most successful in a decade, signaled Oasis' return to popularity. Oasis released another compilation album in 2006, Stop the Clocks, containing what the band considers their "definitive" work. Zak Starkey left Oasis in May 2008, and will be replaced with Chris Sharrock. Oasis' seventh album, Dig Out Your Soul, will be released on October 6, 2008.
