Of Monsters and Men is an English-language indie folk band originating from Reykjanesbær, Iceland; the country's fifth largest city, with a population of 14,000. The band was formed in 2010 and consists of lead singer and guitarist Nanna Hilmarsdóttir, singer and guitarist Ragnar Þórhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, bassist Kristján Kristjánsson, and drummer Arnar Rósenkranz.
The group formed in 2009 when Hilmarsdóttir decided to add to her solo project, Songbird. She enlisted in Þórhallsson, Leifsson, and Rósenkranz in order to form a quartet. Once together, the group entered an annual music competition held in Iceland called Músíktilraunir, which translates to Music Experiments, in 2010. The group won the competition, added two more members, and began performing in small venues across Iceland.
In February 2011, the group signed with the Icelandic recording company Record Records and began work on their debut album, My Head Is an Animal. In August of the same year, a radio station in Philadelphia began playing their hit track “Little Talks,” which quickly raised the popularity of the band in the United States months before their first album was even released stateside.
My Head Is an Animal was first released in Iceland in September 2011. After an extremely popular release in Iceland, the band signed with the Universal Music Group for an international release, which occurred in April 2012. The album peaked at the number six spot on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Recently, Of Monsters and Men released their sophomore album Beneath the Skin, which features the singles “Crystals” and “I of the Storm.” After playing a string of festival dates, the band will embark on a North American headlining tour during the late summer and fall months in support of Beneath the Skin.
