The newest name on the schedules of all the teams in the National Basketball Association is the Oklahoma City Thunder. Formerly the Seattle Supersonics, the Thunder moved to Oklahoma City following the 2008 season looking for a fresh start in the capital city of Oklahoma. The people of OKC are basketball crazy, and Thunder tickets quickly became extremely popular to see the team play at the revamped Ford Center.
In their seasons in Seattle, the Oklahoma City Thunder saw a lot of success and plenty of great players. In 41 seasons in the Emerald City, the Thunder compiled a record of 1,745-1,585 including a NBA Championship in 1979. They also have six jersey numbers retired to the rafters, including Gus Williams (#1), Nate McMillan (#10), Lenny Wilkens (#19), Spencer Haywood (#24), Fred Brown (#32) and Jack Sikma (#43).
Oklahoma City Thunder owner Clay Bennett announced the team would be moving following failed attempts for a new basketball arena in Seattle. Although it moved to the midwest, the franchise remains part of the Northwest Division of the NBA's Western Conference. They notched their first win in team history against Northwest Division rival Minnesota Timberwolves on November 2, 2008.
