Once was a 2006 Irish film, written and directed by John Carney. The movie starred musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who also composed and performed all of the songs. The film was successful at the box office and earned several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Falling Slowly") and the Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film.
Because of its commercial and critical success, the screenplay was adapted into a stage musical. The production premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 6, 2011, and on the same night producers announced a planned move to Broadway. Previews began at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, 2012, with an official opening March 18, 2012. The show has taken Broadway by storm, garnering eleven Tony Award nominations and winning eight.
