One Direction was created during the 7th season of the UK version of X-Factor. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson had tried out as solo candidates but did not qualify for the Boys category and were instead joined together into a band. Though they were one of the more popular acts in the competition, One Direction ultimately placed third during the final week.

After the show ended, One Direction was signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Records and got to work on recording their debut album Up All Night. "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in September 2011 to a #1 spot and was followed up by "Gotta Be You" in November. The full album was also released in November and clocked in at #2 in the UK and at #1 in the United States.

One Direction announced the Up All Night Tour in September of 2011 and prior to their North American dates went on tour with fellow pop band Big Time Rush, which helped jumpstart their popularity in the western hemisphere. The band released its second album, Take Me Home, in November 2012.
