OneRepublic leaped into the spotlight a few years ago due to Timbaland's remix of their song "Apologize." Many people still don't know that the geniuses behind the thoughtful lyrics aren't Timbaland or his writers. Rather, OneRepublic, an alternative rock band originally from Colorado, wrote (and recorded) the song long before Timbaland remixed it for his album. OneRepublic gained a following and a fan base, based on Timbaland's remix, but fans have stayed for the unique sound that OneRepublic provides. Fans of the group have been purchasing OneRepublic tickets like crazy after getting a taste of their true sound. OneRepublic's version of "Apologize," from their album Dreaming Out Loud, has a distinctly different sound than the version Timbaland remixed. It cannot be denied that the remix provided a stepping stone for OneRepublic to enter the spotlight and the mainstream music arena, and now OneRepublic is touring on a multi-national level.

OneRepublic began its musical journey in Colorado with the lead singer, Ryan Tedder. Tedder performed on an MTV show but didn't want to become a sell-out by sacrificing his musical integrity to be more "mainstream." Fortunately for Tedder, the musical artist Timbaland saw him on MTV and took an interest in the lead singer of what would become OneRepublic. Over the next two years, Tedder learned all he could from Timbaland, ultimately returning to Colorado to put together his band. Tedder and his drummer went to LA, where they faced being actual starving artists. Says Tedder in his bio on, "I'm not proud of it…but to buy groceries I had to write bad checks." After a failed contract with Columbia records, OneRepublic suddenly became a sensation on the social networking website MySpace. When Tedder's old friend and mentor Timbaland opened his own record label, he quickly signed on OneRepublic as one of his first acts. The band took the sudden fame in stride. Brown, a bandmember, says, "We figured we would do what we love and not make any money…but we've blown past wherever we thought we'd get. We are now able to perform music that is getting heard by a pretty broad audience. This is bigger than us."

One thing is certain: OneRepublic has brought a fresh sound to the popular music scene that is an infusion of different genres, and they aren't going away any time soon. Rather, OneRepublic may represent a changing current in mainstream music; music that is an amalgam of a wide variety of genres and influences, music with an undeniable power.
