Showing 1-1 of 1 result. This year's FedEx Orange Bowl will see the #13 Cincinnati Bearcats face the #19 Virginia Tech Hokies. The 2009 Orange Bowl will be held at Qualcomm Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on January 1, 2009 at 8:00pm. This game will be the first Orange Bowl for the Bearcats, though the team has previously played in other bowls. The Hokies last played the Orange Bowl in 2008 where they lost 21-24 to the Kansas Jayhawks. Cincinnati will be joined in the Bowl Championship Series by fellow state school the Ohio State Buckeyes, who will play against the Texas Longhorns in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 5.
Cincinnati had an exceptionally strong 2008 season, with a 6-1 record in the Big East conference, and 11-2 overall. Undoubtedly their best game of the season was against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at their home Nippert Stadium, which they won with a crushing 40-7. The Bearcats had several other strong wins this season, including a match up against the Miami Redhawks on September 17, and a game against the Marshall Thundering Herd on October 3 at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia. The Bearcats won their first Big East conference title against the Syracuse Orange on November 29 in Cincinnati.
Virginia Tech will come into the Orange Bowl with a 6-3 record in the ACC conference and 9-4 in total. Among the team's best games of the season were a non-conference game against the Furman University Paladins at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, VA, where the Hokies captured a decisive 24-7 win. Another significant win included the Hokies' 30-12 win against the Boston College Eagles at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on December 6 in Tampa, FL. If the team should win this year's Orange Bowl, it will be the first Bowl Championship Series game they have won since 1995, when they secured the Sugar Bowl title against Texas.

The Orange Bowl was started in 1935 and was traditionally played at Miami Field, and then the Miami Orange Bowl, but is currently held at the Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The game is typically the final game of the year for the Atlantic Coast Conference champion unless they have been chosen for the BCS Championship
The Orange Bowl has been sponsored by FedEx since 1989.
