The forerunner of Pentatonix formed when Kristie Maldonado, Scott Hoying, and Mitch Grassi recorded a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and sent it in to a competition to meet the cast of Glee. It didn't win, but they started gaining a fan base after uploaded the video to YouTube. Later, the group decided to audition for The Sing-Off and, to meet the membership requirements, recruited Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. They then settled on "Pentatonix" as a name.

The group was ultimately successful in auditions and went on to win season 3 of The Sing-Off. After winning, Pentaonix went to work on their first album while continuing to release video covers of popular songs on YouTube. The first EP, PTX, Volume 1 was released in June 2012, followed by a debut national tour. Their first Christmas album, PTXmas, was released that December. Pentatonix made additional releases in 2013 and 2014, including video collaborations with Lindsey Stirling and Todrick Hall in 2013, as well as their first full-scale studio albums in 2014.
