French author and journalist Gaston Leroux wrote Le Fantome de l'Opera in 1911, and the novel was serialized in several newspapers. The story focused on the character of Erik, a deformed musical genius who loves opera music. Phantom of the Opera Plot Summary

Soon Raoul falls in love with his childhood friend, an orphan named Christine Daae, and gives the young soprano a ring. Madame Giry and Meg try to keep things under control, but The Opera Ghost haunts Box Five and Miss Daae thinks he is the Angel of Music.
