The city of Philadelphia had seen professional hockey before, but it wasn't until 1967 that they got a taste of the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyers were one of six expansion teams that year, as the NHL decided to double the size of its league from just the "Original Six". Faced with the difficulties of building a winning team with tough rules and regulations put in place by the league, the Philadelphia Flyers made it look easy. Failing to qualify for the playoffs only twice in their first six seasons, the team finished with a record of 50-16-12 in 1974 which set the stage for a championship run. With Bernie Parent and Bobby Clarke leading the way, the Philadelphia Flyers hoisted the Stanley Cup defeating the Boston Bruins in six games. Entering the following season as defending champs, the team didn't miss a beat finishing with 51 wins. They entered the playoffs confident and ready to take on what anyone had to offer and dismissed of the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres on their way to their second consecutive title.
The Philadelphia Flyers would continue to be a competitive team for the next 14 seasons even making it to the Stanley Cup Finals four more times. But the 1989-90 season was the beginning of a stretch of bad play for the team, failing to qualify for the postseason for the first time in 17 years. Over the next four seasons, the Philadelphia Flyers would not make the playoffs, but in 1992 they acquired stand out player Eric Lindros in the draft. Lindros would help lead the Philadelphia Flyers back to prominence.
