Pink Martini was created in 1994 by artistic director and pianist Thomas Lauderdale and is based in Portland, Oregon. Although based in the Beaver State, Pink Martini saw its beginnings on the other side of the country at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Lauderdale met vocalist China Forbes while attending the university and the two frequently would practice in the school's dormitory. After the two were finished with school, Lauderdale moved back to Portland, Oregon, and Forbes ended up in New York City. They were reconnected three years later when Lauderdale invited Forbes to join his new project, Pink Martini.
Going from a four piece ensemble to its current twelve, Pink Martini made their debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Now they have toured around the world seeing countries like France, Portugal, Spain and the United States with the number of fans growing by the minute. Their debut album Sympathique was released in 1997, an album that became a success around the globe. They were nominated for awards in France for Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Pink Martini have followed up their debut album with the releases of Hang on Little Tomato (2004) and Hey Eugene! (2007).
Lauderdale describe Pink Martini's unique sound as bringing "melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is new and beautiful." They have played with some of the most respected orchestras, from the Boston Pops to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
