When the NHL choose to double its number of teams from the "Original Six", officials choose Pittsburgh for one of its new locations. That season the team cruised through the playoffs on their way to the first Stanley Cup title in team history. Their momentum did not stop there, as the following season the Pittsburgh Penguins were even better winning the title again, this time against the Chicago Blackhawks.

While Mario Lemieux has long since retired, the team has been able to see the rise of another hockey phenom Sidney Crosby who helped lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first division title since the Lemieux era.
