Currently the seventh oldest franchise in the National Football League, the Steelers were founded in 1933 by owner Arthur Rooney. Before adopting the Steelers moniker, the franchise was named the Pittsburgh Pirates after the baseball team of the same name (the teams shared Forbes Field as their home stadium). After seven years of struggle to become a winning franchise, Rooney decided to give his team a new identity renaming them the Pittsburgh Steelers after the cities history of steel workers. Even with the change of identity, the team continued to struggle for the next 40 years.

It was not until 1969, when Art Rooney and his son Dan Rooney decided to hire Chuck Noll to be the team's new head coach that the franchise began to turn everything around. They selected quarterback Terry Bradshaw with the first pick in the NFL Draft in 1970. They then surrounded him with talent like running back Franco Harris, linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert and defensive tackle Joe Greene. In 1972 the team won the AFC division title, the first championship of any kind in team history. Just two years later the Steelers were Super Bowl champions and began a run of championships unseen since. They won Super Bowls in '74, '75, '78 and '79. They are the only team to ever win back to back championships twice. Many have said that the Steelers of 1970's are the best team in the history of the NFL, featuring 10 Pro Football Hall of Famers including head coach Chuck Noll who concluded his time with the team in 1991.

Sometimes nothing could be tougher then attempting to fill the shoes of a legend like Chuck Noll, but team ownership found the perfect man for the job in Bill Cowher in 1992. Cowher, a former NFL linebacker, brought a fiery personality which was perfect to motivate his characteristically hard nosed teams. The team was successful during his time with the club including two appearances in the Super Bowl, winning Super Bowl XL in 2005 against the Seattle Seahawks. Cowher retired following the 2006 season, and was replaced by 35 year old Minnesota Vikings assistant coach Mike Tomlin, who added another Lombardi Trophy to the case for the team when they won the Super Bowl in 2009.
