About the Radio City Rockettes and the Christmas Spectacular

The Radio City Rockettes, originally known as the Missouri Rockets, were founded by Russell Markert in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1925. Destined to be more than just a local hit, the Rockettes caught they eye of showman Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel in 1927, who took them to New York. Renamed the "Roxyettes," the group opened Radio City Music Hall in December 1932.

The Radio City Rockettes have since become a part of the holiday tradition. They performed for American troops during World War II, perform annually at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and typically make an appearance at the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Additionally, the Radio City Rockettes have been involved with Broadway productions like "Can Can" were the halftime performers for 1988's Super Bowl XXII, and have teamed up with many other performers, including Chita Rivera and Paula Abdul.

The Radio City Rockettes are known for their impeccably choreographed movements, high kicks, and the illusion of all the Rockettes being the same height. The group's most famous routines are "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "New York at Christmas," both performed during the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
