About the Radio City Rockettes and the Christmas Spectacular

The Radio City Rockettes, originally known as the Missouri Rockets, were founded by Russell Markert in Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1925. Destined to be more than just a local hit, the Rockettes caught the eye of showman Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel in 1927, who took them to New York. Renamed the "Roxyettes," the group opened Radio City Music Hall in December 1932.

The Radio City Rockettes have since become a part of the holiday tradition. They performed for American troops during World War II, perform annually at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and typically make an appearance at the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Additionally, the Rockettes have been involved with Broadway productions like Can Can, were the halftime performers for 1988's Super Bowl XXII, and have teamed up with many other performers, including Chita Rivera and Paula Abdul.

The Radio City Rockettes are known for their impeccably choreographed movements, high kicks, and the illusion of all the Rockettes being the same height. The group's most famous routines are "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "New York at Christmas," both performed during the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Starting off as a small, 16-member group, the Radio City Rockettes now number 36. Besides performing at Radio City Music Hall this winter, the Rockettes will perform on tour all over the United States.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has been a mainstay of holiday entertainment since the show's opening in 1933. Originally the show was mostly comprised of the Radio City Rockettes, but in the intervening years, the Christmas Spectacular has developed into a ninety-minute-long show with over 140 performers, flashy costumes, and acts choreographed with absolute precision.

Many parts of the show have changed in its more than 75-year history, but two of the show's original components, "March of the Wooden Soldiers" and "Living Nativity," continue to be fan favorites. The 2007 version of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular saw a significant revamping of the show to coincide with its 75th anniversary. New acts, including the Rockette's 3D tour of New York, were created for the anniversary special, literally adding a new dimension of fun and glamour to the winter season's most popular show. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a part of the holiday repertoire that cannot be missed, so get your Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets today!
