A modern take on Puccini's La Bohème, the production deals with powerful themes and issues. It first ran for a limited three-week production in 1994, but opened off-Broadway in 1996. The show's creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly the night before its premiere — but the show went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and the production became a smash hit, eventually moving to Broadway. Rent won a Tony Award for Best Musical, and went on to tour the nation, eventually inspiring a 2005 film of the same name.
