Rihanna has become a musical sensation all over the world! Since Rihanna signed with Def Jam Records in 2005 she’s been an instant knockout. People herded to music stores when she released her first album, Music of the Sun. Fans were crazed to see that her lead single “Pon de Replay” was ranked number two on Billboard Hot 100 shortly after its debut. Some would say Rihanna had it made but it wasn’t an easy ride.
Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 20, 1988 in St. Michael, Barbados to mother Monica Braithwaite and father Ronald Fenty. Ever since she was a little girl Rihanna had a great passion for music. It seemed that some days singing was the only thing that got her through her parent’s rocky marriage and the poverty she grew up in. Rihanna made a life altering decision at the age of 16 when she moved to America to pursue her music career with Record Producer Evan Rogers.
Since her arrival in the United States, Rihanna has been dedicated to her music and her fans. Rihanna’s musical performances come from particular genres and inspirations from her childhood. Her fans appreciate the diversity of her music and how she creates it on her own, taking influences from R&B, reggae, dancehall, pop, dance and urban pop. Over the years, Rihanna released five albums, including Music of the Sun, A Girl like Me, Good Girl Gone Bad, Rated R and Loud. Not only is Rihanna one of the best-selling artists of all time, with over 20 million albums worldwide, she is also an executive producer, video director, philanthropist, author and actress.
Rihanna gained celebrity stardom at a young age and she attributes part of her success to an individual of great influence, Madonna. Rihanna strongly admires Madonna and her musical accomplishments and states that she wants to become the “black Madonna” of music. Rihanna told Music Reporter Lewis Corner, “I think that Madonna was a great inspiration for me, especially on my earlier work. If I had to examine her evolution through time, I think she reinvented her clothing style and music with success every single time. And at the same time remained a real force in entertainment in the whole world."
Since beginning her career, Rihanna has received 131 awards from 184 nominations. In 2007, 2008 and 2010 she won Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the American Music Awards. At the 2008 Grammy Awards, Rihanna won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for the hit single on her Good Girl Gone Bad album, “Umbrella.” Even with her position at the top of the world she continues to put in her time to help others in need. She created the Believe Foundation in 2006 to help terminally ill children all around the world. Explaining her reasons for starting the foundation, she said, “When I was young and I would watch television and I would see all the children suffering, I always said: when I grow up, I want to help.” Also, in her spare time she supports charities which focus on disaster relief, environmental issues and AIDS.
