About Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey

The Ringling Brothers Circus has been around for quite a while. It was founded by five out of seven brothers in 1884. By 1889 all seven Ringling Brothers had joined the show. In 1907 their enterprise had grown big enough to purchase the competing Barnum & Bailey circus, turning it into what is still known as The Greatest Show On Earth®! But the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus also experienced tough times. The Hartford Circus Fire was a devastating event that killed more than 100 visitors. In the summer of 1944 the circus tent caught on fire during a well attended show in Hartford, Connecticut.
