About Riverdance

Riverdance has stepped out of obscurity and into popular culture since its 1994 premier in Ireland. Even if you've never seen a production of Riverdance, you probably know that it's "that Irish dancing show." At its core, Riverdance exists to tell the story of Ireland through dance, but it incorporated other forms of dance into the show including Flamenco and American Tap. As Clive Barnes (who wrote a piece on the history of the show for Riverdance.com) notes, everyone seems to be a little bit Irish these days. There is something mysterious and romantic about that Emerald Isle where your distant relatives and their ancestors lived. Even if you don't suspect that you have roots in Ireland or Northern Europe, the powerful music and pounding rhythm of Riverdance speaks to people around the world.

A seven-minute performance created the spark that would create Riverdance. In 1994 at the Eurovision Song Contest, a small troup danced during the intermission and garnered rave reviews. The lead performers in the small performance (and later in the full scale productions) were Michael Flatley and Jean Butler. Because of the incredible feedback from the audience, a full stage version of Riverdance premiered in Dublin in 1995. The show became so popular that it began touring; even when Michael Flatley left in 1999 over "creative differences" and created his own competing dance show called Lord of the Dance, Riverdance flourished. Its premiers in London and New York City at Radio City Music Hall launched Riverdance into the international spotlight. With innovative choreography and music, the show wasn't like anything anyone had seen before.
