In 1972, Robert Kelly Thomas was born on a US military base in Landstuhl, Germany. His parents divorced when he was a child, and his mother returned to the United States. Growing up in South Carolina and Florida, Robert dropped out of high school to pursue a music career. As a young man, he moved to Orlando and formed a pop music band called Tabitha's Secret. Next, he teamed up with guitarist Kyle Cook, drummer Paul Doucette, guitar player Adam Gaynor, and bassist Brian Yale to create a new alternative group. Atlantic Records gave the southern rock band a contract, and soon fans were buying cheap Matchbox 20 tickets.
Debuting with the album Yourself or Someone Like You, the post-grunge group released "Push," "Back 2 Good," "3am," and other hits. The group was as popular as Dave Matthews Band, and Rob was enjoying both personal and professional success. After meeting a model named Marisol Maldonado, the singer got married in 1998. A New York beauty, his wife inspired him to write a song for the new Carlos Santana album, and Rob won three Grammy Awards for "Smooth." Next, MBT released Mad Season with the ballad "If You're Gone" and the hit "Bent," and Rob won the first Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
When Gaynor left the band in 2005, Matchbox Twenty decided to take a long break. Using the opportunity to focus on other activities, Rob produced his first solo album. …Something to Be featured singles like "Lonely No More" and reached number one on The Billboard 200. In addition, Rob wrote songs for Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Chris Daughtry, and other stars. MB20 reunited in 2007 with Exile on Mainstream, but Thomas still explores side projects. His second solo album, Cradlesong, was released in June of 2009. If you like The Goo Goo Dolls, Rod Stewart, and Green Day, check out Rob Thomas lyrics "Someday" soon.
