His interest and talent in music should come as no surprise to anyone, as he was born into a very musical family. His parents are folk music celebrities Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, who passed on their passion to him. He was born in 1973 in Rhineback, New York and resided there until his parents divorced when he was a child. Rufus Wainwright relocated to Montreal, Canada with his mother and stayed there for most of his youth.
He began to learn classical piano at the young age of six years old, and by the age of thirteen he was already touring. Rufus Wainwright toured as part of the 'McGarrigle Sisters and Family,' which was a group that consisted of his mother, his aunt Anna, his sister Martha and himself. While he was part of the group Rufus was allowed to show his talents, as he had opportunities to perform solo songs. Those opportunities allowed him to be recognized and nominated for prestigious Canadian music awards. Only a year after he began touring with his family, Rufus Wainwright was nominated for a Juno Award, equivalent to the Grammy, for Most Promising Young Artist. At the same time he was nominated for the Canadian equivalent to an Oscar, the Genie, for his song 'I'm A-Runnin' from the movie 'Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller'.
At an early age Rufus Wainwright found solace in the music of the opera, and became a huge admirer of performers like Edith Piaf and Judy Garland. After studying music at McGill University in Montreal, he turned his attention to pop and rock music. He signed a record deal with DreamWorks after his father helped to shop his demo tape. Shortly after is signing, Rufus Wainwright released his self titled first album in 1998. The album came out to critical acclaim and was recognized as one of the best of that year. His following releases have been met with similar adoration, 'Poses'(2001), 'Want One'(2003), 'Want Two'(2004) and in 2007 he released 'Release the Stars'.
