About Rush

Rush was formed in 1968 in Toronto, Ontario, by John Rutsey, Jeff Jones, and Alex Lifeson. The group began their long and prosperous career by playing the local club circuit, and in 1974, they released a self-titled debut album. Although Rush did not crack the Top 100 on the Billboard charts, the album still did much for the popularity of the band. The single "Working Man" began to earn a lot of radio play and attracted the attention of many hard rock fans. Rush's next five albums also failed to make it into the Top 25, but the release of Permanent Waves in 1980 marked the beginning of a string of Rush albums that would top the charts.

Moving Pictures was released in 1981 and included the singles "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight," and "Vital Signs." The album has sold over 6.3 million copies and earned Rush a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In 1982, the band released Signals, which sold over 2 million copies and contained the singles "New World Man," "Subdivisions," "The Analog Kid," "The Weapon (Part II of Fear)," and "Countdown." Other notable albums included 1985's Power Windows, 1991's Roll the Bones, and 1993's Counterparts. Some of Rush's popular singles include "Closer to the Heart," "Force Ten," "Show Don't Tell," "Dreamline," "Stick It Out," "Test for Echo," and "The Larger Bowl (A Pantoum)."

As successful as Rush is in album sales, they are just as popular on the road. Rush concerts are well known for improvisational solos by drummer Neil Peart, who uses MIDI trigger pads to add a number of sounds to the performance. The band is also famous for trying to meticulously recreate the sound of their songs during their sets, with members using additional MIDI controllers to produce sampled sounds.

Over the course of its existence, the trio has enjoyed album sales totaling more than 40 million copies worldwide. Among their releases, Rush has had 24 gold records and 14 platinum records and are ranked number four for this metric, just behind Kiss. Rush has also been nominated for five Grammy Awards and have won their fair share of Juno Awards, including Most Promising Group of the Year in 1974 and Artist of the Decade in 1990.
