From the ABA to the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have become one of the elite franchises in sports. The franchise boasts two of the greatest big men ever, a man nicknamed "The Iceman" and a forward who became the first player in NBA history to play after receiving a kidney transplant. You have your chance to be part of the excitement by getting Spurs basketball tickets at TicketNetwork.com.
When the American Basketball Association (ABA) took the floor in 1967, the Spurs (then the Dallas Chaparrals) were one of its original franchises. For the next 10 seasons the franchise struggled to survive like every other ABA team and when the ABA merged with the more powerful NBA, the San Antonio Spurs were one of four teams that were absorbed into the league. With the star power of "The Iceman" George Gervin, the team made a seamless transition into the NBA, instantly becoming a true contender. Although never breaking through to win the title in the Gervin era, the Spurs were accepted as one of the toughest teams in the game.
When George Gervin left following the 1985 season, the team fell hard, quickly becoming one of the worst in the league. For the next five years, San Antonio never won more than 35 games and fans stopped buying Spurs tickets as attendance dwindled. But the franchise's history took a sharp turn when they selected Navy center David Robinson in 1987. After "The Admiral" served his two years in the Navy, he joined the team and helped them to a 56-26 record, quickly becoming an unstoppable force in the NBA. The 1996-1997 season was supposed to be a successful campaign for the team, but with Robinson and forward Sean Elliot limited because of injuries, the Spurs finished with the worst record in franchise history. The bright spot of the season came when they won the draft lottery, which allowed them to select coveted All-American Tim Duncan from Wake Forest University.
The selection of Duncan ushered in a new era for the franchise, an era of championships. Their first title came in 1999, when the team dominated the Western Conference on their way to the NBA Finals, where they easily took care of the New York Knicks in five games. Over the following years, the team would be in the championship hunt every year, collecting three additional titles in 2003, 2005 and 2007 with Duncan winning NBA Finals MVP in all but one of the title runs.
They continue to be among the elite class of the NBA. In San Antonio, the Spurs are the only game in town. Make sure you join the thousands of other fans at the AT&T Center and get your San Antonio Spurs tickets today!
