Guitar legend Carlos Santana and his band that uses his surname are recognized as one of the great rock bands of the last 50 years. They emerged in the 1960's with a mix of rock, blues and salsa that changed the typical sound of music. Santana was formed in 1966 with Carlos Santana being the leader of the band originally dubbed the Santana Blues Band. Although their debut album had already been recorded, Santana toured nationally before its release making a stop at the transcendent music festival Woodstock. With the performance by Santana recognized as one of highlights of Woodstock, their album Santana (1969) was released shortly after. The album went onto achieve double platinum status remaining on the top albums chart for two years. Their follow up album also was a big success, Abraxas (1970) topped the album chart for the first six weeks after its release. It featured the hit singles 'Black Magic Woman' and 'Oye Como Va'. Their first two albums were among the Santana albums that achieved platinum status in the late sixties and seventies with others including Santana III (1971), Caravanserai (1972) and Moonflower (1977).
Santana all but seemed done with finding the commercial success that they once had, but the release of Supernatural (1999) changed all that. The album attained incredible success selling over 25 million copies worldwide, and achieving Diamond status from the Recording Industry Association of America. The Grammy Award winning album includes collaborations between Santana and multiple artists including Dave Matthews, Eric Clapton, and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty. Rob Thomas helped Santana on the single 'Smooth' that was the most successful track on the album spending 12 weeks as the #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

- In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Carlos Santana as the number fifteen guitarist on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time.
- Carlos Santana and the other original members of Santana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Other inductees that year included The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.
