Santana was formed in 1966 by Carlos Santana as the Santana Blues Band. Although their debut album had already been recorded, Santana toured nationally before its release, making, in 1969, a stop at the transcendent music festival Woodstock. Their performance was recognized as one of highlights of the show, and the album Santana was released later the same year. It went on to achieve double platinum status and sat on the top albums chart for two years. Their follow up, 1970's Abraxas, was also a big success. It topped the Billboard 200 for the first six weeks after its release and eventually went platinum. It featured the hit singles "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va." Overall, Santana had five platinum ranked albums in the late 1960s and 1970s, with others including 1971's Santana III, 1972's Caravanserai and 1977's Moonflower.

Entering the 1980s, changing music tastes saw the band's album sales drop. They has minor successes with 1979's Marathon, 1981's Zebop and 1982's Shango, but albums after that failed to reach even gold certification. Santana remained popular live in concert, but found they could not sell records. The release of the 1999 album Supernatural changed all that. The album was very popular, selling over 25 million copies worldwide. The Grammy Award winning album included collaborations between Santana and multiple artists, such as Dave Matthews, Eric Clapton and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty. It contained popular songs like "Smooth," "Maria Maria," and "Love of My Life." Thomas helped Santana on "Smooth," which spent 12 weeks as the #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. Santana found their ticket back to commercial success and have retained their popularity ever since. The group currently has a new album in production.
